During 1-on-1 drills, Jaxson Dart hit Odell Beckham Jr. for a touchdown. Jameis Winston also connected with wide receiver Calvin Austin III for a score.

Moving on to 7-on-7 in the red zone, Dart threw touchdowns to tight end Theo Johnson and rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields. Winston found the end zone two more times with completions to wide receiver Xavier Gipson and tight end Thomas Fidone II, who made the catch of the day on a separate play. More on that later.

During 11-on-11, also in the red zone, Dart had a touchdown pass to running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Winston hit wide receiver Dalen Cambre for a score.

Arvell adds new meaning to top ‘pick’

Arvell Reese, the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, made yet another impact play on Tuesday. Known for popping pads – “That’s the best sound you can get,” he said last week – the rookie linebacker came down with an interception that he tipped to himself inside the five-yard line during a 7-on-7 period.

“That was a nice play by him,” defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson said after practice. “We were in a softer coverage down there. Two went to the flat, he pushed to the flat, and just you saw his length. He was in the window from a seven cut in the flat concept, and he saw the quarterback throw it, and he went up and made it a play. He’s been impressive, not to put too much on a kid’s plate, being a rookie, but he’s picked up everything from a defensive structure, the calls, the adjustments, and he’s running around playing fast and physical. The thing I love about him is if he messes up, he’s not a repeat mistake offender. So, he’ll correct his mistake, learn from it, and if he makes a mistake, it’s something that he doesn’t know. So, it’s been outstanding to watch this young man grow.”

Safety Jevón Holland snatched an interception in the end zone during 1-on-1 drills on a play that looked like it was going to be caught by the receiver. The veteran nearly had another but settled for the pass breakup in the end zone during a team period.

Outside linebackers Brian Burns and Abdul Carter had solo sacks and then, on a separate play, converged on the quarterback together to force an incompletion. Carter also had a tackle for loss in the red zone.

“Abdul, the big thing with Abdul is this. I spent a lot of time with Abdul last year coming out in the draft, being a high pick. Abdul was a hell of an athlete, and he played like a hell of an athlete last year,” Wilson said. “Right now, what Abdul is doing is he’s mastering the technique and fundamentals. Abdul is trying to be a technician on the football field. It’s no more just pass rush. It’s about being a true end, and he’s embracing it every day. He comes out here and works. He’s coming down the line, and they’re running flash blocks, and he’s trying to go meet it in the A and B gap, and then he has the ability to convert. I think just like all players, man, it’s not the first year. it’s the second year. It’s the maturation. It’s them growing as players, growing as men off the field, and you see these young guys growing every day because it’s the second go-around or it’s the third go-around. It’s a new opportunity. It’s a new staff. They’re being embraced from a coaching standpoint, and I think they all love being around each other in the room, and you’re seeing it on the field right now. We just hope it carries over in the season and carries over in the games.”

Fidone made a diving one-handed catch on a pass from Winston during a team period in the middle of practice. Last year’s seventh-round pick also had the catch of the day on Monday, hauling in a deep pass from Winston down the middle with two defenders on him.

Dart and tight end Isaiah Likely connected a handful of times, a common theme throughout the spring and summer.

Linebacker Micah McFadden broke up a pass in the end zone.

Nic Jones made a nice play and swatted a pass on the sideline. Fellow cornerback Art Green also broke up a pass at the goal line.

The improbable play of the day was a catch by Chris Manhertz, who came down with the ball after it deflected off fellow tight end Tanner Conner and then straight in the air off safety Jason Pinnock’s helmet.

Defensive lineman Darius Alexander and the rookie Reese teamed up for a sack late in practice.
