In the Minnesota Vikings’ preseason opener against the New York Giants this past Saturday, Kyler Murray threw three passes, completing two of them for ten yards.
Apparently. . .that’s enough.
According to reports, Murray is not expected to play in Saturday’s second preseason game, when the Vikings host the Baltimore Ravens at U.S. Bank Stadium. Instead, the team will emphasize Murray’s performace in the joint practices between the two teams that will happen on Wednesday and Thursday.
Murray played the opening series for the Vikings, which was a 10-play, 54-yard drive that ended in a 35-yard field goal by Will Reichard. Six of the plays on the drive were run plays, with Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason getting three carries each. Murray did have an 8-yard completion to Jordan Addison to convert a third down.
If Murray does not play, it will be interesting to see how the Vikings divide the snaps up between the remaining quarterbacks on the depth chart. J.J. McCarthy took over for Murray after the first series and played the remainder of the first half on Saturday, with Carson Wentz taking over in the second half. Wentz gave way to Max Brosmer late in the third quarter, but had to come back into the game after Brosmer suffered an injury to his right wrist and ended up finishing things out.
As of today, there have been no updates to Brosmer’s status (that I have seen, in any case), and the Vikings have not yet brought in another quarterback.
So, if you were hoping to see a little bit more from Kyler Murray in Saturday’s preseason game at U.S. Bank Stadium, it does not appear as though you’re going to get your wish.
