NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Ice Bucket Challenge resurfaced after former Tennessee Titan Chris Johnson revealed his ALS diagnosis. The challenge has taken on a life of its own since, with coaches, players and fans helping to raise awareness. The Titans front office also took part.
The entire team joined in on the challenge Wednesday in solidarity after practice. They held up Chris Johnson and Tim Shaw jerseys before dumping buckets of ice water on themselves. Johnson and Shaw are both former Titans battling ALS.
“It just seems like there are a lot of athletes, not just in football, but all over, that are being affected by this thing. To get a group of guys together and bring awareness to it, I think, it always special,” Head Coach Robert Saleh said.
John Franklin-Myers also spoke about the challenge.
“These are young, young men that are experiencing something just extremely traumatic. You can only feel for them, you can only want the best for them. You can only say ‘Look man, I want to do whatever I can to help these guys, I want to do whatever I can to raise money, to raise awareness,’” Franklin-Myers said.
Tennessee challenged their AFC South division rivals to do the challenge next.
Former Titans running back Chris Johnson will be inducted into the Titans ring of honor at their home opener against the New York Jets on September 13.
