Waukee football coach arrested on OWI charge before school year

DES MOINES, Iowa —

Officials with Waukee Community School District confirmed that Gabe Bakker, the head football coach and high school teacher, was arrested and charged with OWI on Friday.

Officials told KCCI on Saturday that Bakker self-reported the arrest and sent an email to the football team apologizing for any disruption the incident may cause.

In a statement to KCCI, the district said:

“We expect all our staff members to serve as role models for students and live our core values, and we take this incident seriously. The District is addressing the situation in accordance with Board policy and established personnel procedures.

“We understand that our community may have questions. Because this is an ongoing legal process and confidential personnel matter, we cannot provide further details at this time. Our priority is supporting our students as the school year begins.”

The district added that it cannot provide further details because it is an ongoing legal matter.
