The defending champion Seahawks opened the preseason last Saturday at home with a 17-7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys as 1.5-point favorites with the Under (37.5) cashing. QB Drew Lock led a 13-play, 80-yard drive to open the game and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass, but they only had 156 total yards for the game, playing only backups.

The Titans opened the preseason last week on Thursday with a 19-13 road win over the San Francisco 49ers, failing to cover the 6.5-point spread as favorites as the Under (40) cashed. The Titans starters played into the second quarter, and QB Cam Ward led an 11-play, 95-yard drive ending with a Tony Pollard touchdown run on their first possession. Joey Slye made 4 field goals after that to hold on for the win.

The Titans are expected again to play their starters, even after a joint practice with the Seahawks this week. Seattle starters might not play, which gives the Titans a clear advantage early in the game.

However, unless they take advantage early, all preseason games end up with reserves and fringe NFL players on the field making deciding plays, which makes handicapping preseason games nearly impossible.

As such, the best way to bet the preseason is to pick a few moneyline underdogs to pick to win outright. Nine ML underdogs won outright in the first week of the preseason.

Twelve underdogs covered the spread last week in the preseason, but 9 of them won outright. And, as previously noted, trends to follow when teams are playing third- and fourth-string players, many of whom will not be on NFL rosters next move, it is better to go with the plus odds on a few ML underdogs.

Only 5 games in the first week of the preseason had totals over 38, but 4 of the 5 games on Thursday and Friday had totals above that. Ten games of the 16 in last year’s preseason Week 2 had totals of 38 or more.
