The Pittsburgh Steelers are activating DB Jalen Ramsey from the Active/PUP list, first-year head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters Monday. Ramsey is eligible to practice after missing the entirety of training camp with a knee injury.

Ramsey reportedly suffered the injury during minicamp during the spring. The injury lingered into the summer, and the Steelers placed Ramsey on Active/PUP after the team reported for training camp in late July. At the time, GM Omar Khan indicated Ramsey would miss “a couple weeks” but was expected to be ready for the Week 1 opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Ramsey slowly ramped up his rehab and recovery work during training camp, going from light jogging to spirited running and change-of-direction drills while under the supervision of the strength and conditioning staff.

How Pittsburgh plans to utilize Ramsey defensively is unclear. The Steelers could play him at slot corner, safety, or a mixture of the two. Ramsey was listed as the starting slot corner on the team’s first depth chart. He figures to play a variety of roles under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Graham downplayed the time Ramsey has missed, noting that he’s remained active during team meetings.

Traded over from the Miami Dolphins in June 2025, Ramsey recorded 88 tackles (four for a loss), three sacks, and one interception during his first year with the Steelers. Turning 32 in October, he’s one of the oldest players on one of the NFL’s oldest defenses, but the team believes a switch away from outside corner could give him a Charles Woodson vibe and extend his playing career.

Pittsburgh opened camp with three defensive backs on the Active/PUP list: CB Donte Kent, CB Joey Porter Jr., and Ramsey. Kent and Porter remain on the PUP list.

The Steelers open the regular season Sept. 13 against the Falcons.
