The Jets’ kicking competition is over — for now, at least.

They are waiving Cade York as special teams coordinator Chris Banjo announced Tuesday morning that Jason Sanders has won the job.

“We are going to be moving on from Cade,” Banjo said. “He did a great job for us all throughout training camp, all throughout the evaluation process in the games as well. But we feel really good about what Jason is and where we are with him right now. The experience he has … kicking in our division. So looking forward to that opportunity with him.”

Sanders, 30, was once considered one of the NFL’s better kickers. During his time with the Dolphins from 2018-24, he made 84.6% of his field-goal attempts, including a career-long 57-yarder. Sanders was also named a first-team All-Pro in 2020 after converting 92.3% of his field-goal attempts.

But Miami released Sanders in March after he missed the entire 2025 season because of a hip injury. He spent two months with the Giants before joining the Jets, who claimed him off waivers in June.

“You look at his pedigree and what he’s been able to do in big moments and big games in our division,” Banjo said about Sanders. “You get to be around that all offseason throughout training camp, throughout the evaluation process and it starts to build more confidence and more conviction in who he is as a player. So we are really excited about that.”

York, 25, signed with the Jets in March. He has bounced around the league, spending time with the Browns, Titans, Giants, Commanders, Bengals and Saints.

York made both of his field-goal attempts during the Jets’ preseason opener against the Buccaneers, with his longest coming from 38 yards. He missed a 59-yard attempt just before halftime in last week’s game against the Steelers.

Both York and Sanders struggled during Monday’s practice. York made 3-of-5 field-goal attempts, missing from 38 and 44 yards.

Sanders was even worse, converting only 2-of-5 kicks, missing from 38, 43 and 54 yards. However, he has made both of his field-goal attempts during the preseason.

The Jets are in this situation because they allowed Nick Folk, who made 28-of-29 field-goal attempts last season, to leave for the Falcons in free agency. They could still sign another kicker after final cuts, when all 32 teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. Sunday. But for now, Sanders will get the first opportunity to lock down the job.
