LA Rams’ head coach Sean McVay announced on Tuesday that Stetson Bennett has officially made the Rams’ final 53-man roster. McVay shared that the Rams will carry three quarterbacks this season, so Matthew Stafford will be their starter along with Bennett and rookie quarterback Ty Simpson below him on their depth chart.
Bennett and Simpson are still battling to be No. 2 on the depth chart, but for now they both know they will make the Rams’ final roster. The Rams may not announce who their backup is for a couple weeks still, but actions behind the scenes are hinting at what they may ultimately decide to do.

Even since Ty Simpson was drafted in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft the competition between him and Bennett has been intense. Some NFL fans thought Simpson would immediately be handed the backup job, but Bennett and the Rams had other plans.
Throughout training camp this year the Rams have made multiple decisions that point to Bennett being the likely choice to be their backup. This includes him getting reps in practice before Simpson as well as starting their first two preseason games as well. Bennett has taken advantage of these opportunities, and most recently he shined with an impressive first half performance in their most recent preseason game.
The Rams however aren’t ready to make a decision yet, but it does seem like Bennett is the most likely choice right now.
Stetson Bennett’s future beyond the 2026 season is still unclear
Bennett’s future with the Rams this season is becoming more clear, but his future beyond this year remains uncertain.
Bennett’s contract with the Rams expires after this season. The Rams could opt to resign him, but after spending a first round pick on Ty Simpson many NFL analysts believe they will let Bennett walk after this year. He however could force the Rams to keep him around though with a solid season this year.
Imagine a scenario where Bennett practices well all season and Simpson struggles. If Simpson doesn’t prove that he’s ready to be their backup after this season then the Rams may have no choice but to keep Bennett around longer. If that happens then Bennett could eventually become the Rams’ starting quarterback because current starter Matthew Stafford is aging and nearing retirement.
If the Rams decide to let Bennett walk then he could sign with a new team next offseason. The hope is that the team signing him would give him a chance to be their starter, but that is something Bennett can worry about next year.
Right now Bennett needs to win the backup job for this season. That gives him his best chance to have a successful future in the NFL beyond this season whether it’s with the Rams or another team, so before worrying about his future Bennett needs to remain focused on the task at hand right now which is beating Simpson for the Rams’ backup job.
