The Patriots released one of their top backups Monday to make room for their waiver claims.
The team released offensive lineman Ben Brown, per the NFL transaction wire. It’s a logistical move, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, with Brown expected to rejoin the Patriots shortly.
Brown began the summer as the Patriots’ top backup at guard and center. He suffered an injury in the Patriots’ first preseason game.
The team needed to make room for new waiver claims tight end Cameron Latu and linebacker Darius Muasau. The Patriots also cut linebacker K.J. Britt to make space on the 53-man roster.
As a vested veteran, Brown does not need to pass through waivers.
Brown originally joined the Patriots in 2024 after they signed him off the Raiders’ practice squad. Brown signed a two-year contract extension with the Patriots last season.
The Patriots are currently left with LT Will Campbell, LG Alijah Vera-Tucker, C Jared Wilson, RG Mike Onwenu, RT Morgan Moses, backup tackles Caleb Lomu, Dametrious Crownover and Walter Rouse and backup guard/center Greg Van Roten on their offensive line.
Brown started 10 games for the Patriots in 2024 and another four games in 2025. Including the postseason, he’s appeared in 31 games over two years with the Patriots.
