SANTA CLARA — Social media has been abuzz for nearly a week about an alleged scam artist who wore No. 7 for the 49ers.

Well, there’s a new No. 7 in town. And this one is legit.

Rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling changed to his new number after being assigned No. 15 from the time he was selected with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“I wore 7 back in high school,” Stribling said on Tuesday. “It was one of my favorite numbers at the time. I kind of want to be comfortable in that and do my thing.”

No. 7 also is the number Daejon Love, 35, wore in social media posts in his plot to allegedly bilk 26 victims out of a combined $1.3 million. The FBI arrested Love and an accomplice last week in Idaho.

Stribling was reminded of the recent infamy surrounding that number.

“Yeah, that’s hilarious,” he said. “It’s kind of crazy, but it’s cool at the same time.”

Stribling figures to factor prominently in the 49ers’ offense, as early as Week 1 when the 49ers travel to Melbourne, Australia, to face the Los Angeles Rams.

His performance on the practice field and in the preseason brought a quick end to any questions pertaining to where he was drafted. At the time of his selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, many media draft analysts had other receivers rated higher.

“I don’t really worry about all the outside noise or the opinions of where I was drafted,” Stribling said. “I’m just here to do my job: catch the ball, score touchdowns and be a great run blocker, also.”

There is a lot to learn from a rookie receiver in coach Kyle Shanahan’s system, and Stribling knows he is far from being a finished product.

When asked about his comfort level with his grasp of the 49ers’ offense, Stribling said he would not use “comfort” as a descriptor.

“I’m learning every day, stacking days, getting all the coaching points, and from my teammates, just to be the best I can do,” he said.

He said he has picked up the importance of being on all the details from the coaching staff, as well as such veterans as Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk.

“Details make or break everything,” Stribling said. “Just being on top of the details, being on top of the alignments and assignments. All those kinds of things. It’s much different vs. college.”
