As expected, the Broncos on Monday signed Taylor Rapp to the practice squad.

The veteran safety had originally signed with the Broncos on Aug. 20 before being released Aug. 26 due to personal reasons. Denver coach Sean Payton said then he expected Rapp to return at some point to the team and The Denver Gazette reported he likely would be put on the practice squad upon a return.

Rapp worked out with Denver last Friday and looked good. The Broncos then made the decision to sign him and he took part in Monday’s practice.

Rapp is entering his eighth NFL season. He played for the Los Angeles Rams from 2019—22 and the Buffalo Bills from 2023—25. He was a starting safety when the Rams won a Super Bowl in the 2021 season.

To make room on the practice squad for Rapp, the Broncos released long snapper Luke Basso. That leaves Denver’s only long snapper as Mitchell Fraboni, who is on the practice squad and in line to be elevated for next Monday’s regular-season opener at Kansas City. Fraboni is later expected to be signed to the 53-man roster.

Battling crowd noise

For Monday’s game, Payton said it will be very important for the Broncos to combat the noise at Arrowhead Stadium.

“You’re going to have a real good protection plan and be disciplined in your approach, especially when you’re facing that defense on the road with the noise,’’ Payton said.

The Chiefs last season were sixth in the NFL in scoring defense. They are led by future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Chris Jones, who has been named to the Pro Bowl seven straight seasons.

“Starting fast in a game can sometimes keep a crowd quiet in the beginning,’’ said Denver guard Quinn Meinerz.
