Ravens Are Up for Challenge of Tackling Jonathan Taylor
None of the Ravens’ defensive starters took a snap in the preseason. Baltimore’s defense dominated anyway, allowing just 13 points in three games.
While the Ravens’ starters thrived in joint practices against the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders, the unit is eager to see how it fares in a real game against a talented offense.
The Colts’ attack is led by running back Jonathan Taylor, who Ravens veteran defensive end Calais Campbell called arguably the most explosive runner in the league. He finished third in the league in rushing last season with 1,585 yards.
Tackling will be paramount, and Smith said it’s a point of emphasis this week.
“Since his Wisconsin days — and even in the NFL — he is a really good back,” Smith said of Taylor. “But love the challenge going up against great backs in this league, and there are a lot of great ones. So, excited for the challenge, and I know it will be a good test for us.”
In two career games against the Ravens, Taylor has run 21 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns. He’s hurt them more as a receiver with five catches for 123 yards and a score.
“I think it is [about] getting out on the right foot from the first play of the game,” Smith said. “I think this [Colts] offense is a very efficient offense, and as far as just speaking from a defensive perspective, early downs, you want to get these guys behind the sticks.”
