The Commanders have released veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humprhies, the team announced on Friday morning. This cut comes but a few weeks after the former Pro Bowl standout was signed and just days before Sunday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
No corresponding move was immediately announced.
Humphries was signed the last week of the preseason, on Aug. 26, and was active during a joint pracitce against Baltimore and the subsequent preseason game against the Ravens.
Washington could add an offensive tackle from the practice squad with the open roster spot, which is possible with just eight offensive linemen currently on the roster. Or, with that whole group healthy, they could leave the 53rd spot open and earmark it for Dorance Armstrong, who will come off suspension after the Eagles game.
Or, they could keep him off the roster for a week and bring him back to avoid a full-season base salary guarantee. Time will tell what the Commanders do here.
