Lions vs. Saints: The matchup
The Lions have much to gain after slumping to a 9-8 record with six losses in a span of eight games to get eliminated from the NFC Playoffs for the first time since 2022. Quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and left tackle Penei Sewell are back to rep an offense with elite talent at most key positions, while Aidan Hutchinson anchors a defense with hopes of rebounding after allowing 4.3 more points per game and 16.1 more rushing yards per game than it in 2024.
The Saints get the added benefit in 2026 of knowing and trusting that quarterback Tyler Shough is their short and long-term answer at the position, offering management a chance in the offseason to build around the former Louisville product’s abilities. Much of the New Orleans offensive line returns intact, and three-time 1,000-yard rusher Travis Etienne Jr. joins Alvin Kamara in the backfield and WR1 Chris Olave on the outside. The Saints finished the ‘25 season with four wins over their final five games to end a 6-11 campaign on a high note.
