Aaron Rodgers was true to his word; the veteran quarterback finally reached an agreement on a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, meaning he in fact will not be signing with the New Orleans Saints. Rodgers had said as much publicly, and for their part, the Saints had not expressed interest in him, either. But now it’s confirmed that he’ll be going to Pittsburgh, not New Orleans.

So who will be starting at quarterback for the Saints? Theoretically, it’s a three-man competition to replace Derek Carr. But Jake Haener missing most of the summer with an injury only widens the gap between him and the other two names in the race. Spencer Rattler got off to a hot start at OTAs, which you’d expect of a more experienced passer, but rookie draft pick Tyler Shough can’t be overlooked.

That head coach Kellen Moore spent a second-round pick on Shough after having all spring to evaluate Rattler’s game tape from last season says a lot about both of them. We’ll have to wait and see who comes out on top, but the smart money says this was always Shough’s battle to lose. He has three months to prove why Moore’s confidence in him is warranted. The Saints seem comfortable without having a veteran quarterback in the room (whether it’s Rodgers or someone else). Let’s hope that plan works out in 2025.
