Daron Payne, Washington Commanders defensive lineman, two-time Crimson Tide national champion and Birmingham native will host a free football camp for local youth.

The camp, supported by a grant from the NFL Foundation, will be hosted at Payne’s alma mater, Shades Valley High School in Irondale, on Monday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is expected to bring together hundreds of kids for a day of football fundamentals and fun, including on-the-field drills run by Payne.

“The more than 400 NFL players, legends and coaches who are hosting free youth football camps this summer are great ambassadors for our game, and we are excited to see the impact they’ll make in communities across the country this year and beyond,” Alexia Gallagher, NFL Foundation executive director and vice president of philanthropy, said in a statement.

The summer camp is part of a larger effort to engage underserved communities in activities that promote teamwork and sportsmanship.

The NFL Foundation recently announced that it is awarding about $1 million in grants through its Youth Football Camp Grant program to host free youth football camps across the U.S. this summer.

“For more than 25 years, the NFL Foundation has been proud to support the incredible efforts of the NFL family in growing the game of football and ensuring that youth have the opportunity to stay active and healthy through America’s favorite sport,” Gallagher said in a statement.
