Former New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers announced his return to the NFL on Thursday. Rodgers inked a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers after months of back-and-forth with the franchise.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the signing is Rodgers will make a return to MetLife Stadium immediately, facing the Jets in Week 1. The matchup would have been intriguing enough without Rodgers, as Jets’ quarterback Justin Fields will play his first game against his former team. But now, both quarterbacks are set for a must-watch revenge game.
For Rodgers specifically, the payback will be personal. Rodgers had two underwhelming seasons in New York (more accurately: a season and four snaps). As a result of Rodgers’ failure to put together a winning season, new head coach Aaron Glenn sat down with Rodgers.
Rodgers flew across the country to meet with Glenn, expecting to sit and talk about the vision for the franchise, get acquainted and figure out what’s next. Upon Rodgers’ arrival, according to Rodgers’ account on the “Pat McAfee Show,” Glenn opened the conversation by telling the veteran quarterback the Jets were “going in a different direction at quarterback.”
Rodgers was shocked, believing that such a short conversation that he flew across the country for could have been had over the phone. Glenn told Rodgers he didn’t want players in the locker room being distracted by Rodgers’ presence, saying “I don’t want to be talking and having guys turning around to look at you.”

Following up, Rodgers made a point of saying to McAfee, “Are you assuming that I would be in the back of the room in a team meeting, undermining what you’re saying? You don’t know me!”
Rodgers continued, “I wasn’t upset about it. I was surprised, I felt like there wasn’t an ample amount of respect in that meeting, but I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised.”
Glenn’s conduct in the meeting and his approach to the situation clearly displeased Rodgers. The two will have the opportunity to go head-to-head in the opening week of the season, marking Glenn’s first game as an NFL head coach.
