Let’s make our way through the Tennessee Titans roster.
The Titans begin mandatory minicamp on June 10, the final step in the offseason program before the team takes a summer break and reconvenes in late July for training camp. It has been an offseason of turnover; nearly half of the players on the roster weren’t with the Titans when the 2024 season ended in January.
With 91 players on the roster and no requirement to cut down to 53 until August, minicamp is a crowded affair full of players competing for starting jobs and roster spots.
That’ll be our focus here. Before minicamp gets underway, let’s divide the Titans into six groups in descending level of confidence of making the roster. Starting with the most obvious contenders and working down toward the mysterious unknowns, here is The Tennessean’s June roster confidence meter.
Tennessee Titans roster projections: Minicamp edition100% locks to make the team (32 players)
Players: QB Cam Ward, RB Tony Pollard, RB Tyjae Spears, WR Calvin Ridley, WR Tyler Lockett, WR Elic Ayomanor, WR Chimere Dike, TE Chig Okonkwo, TE Gunnar Helm, OT Dan Moore Jr., OT JC Latham, G Peter Skoronski, G Kevin Zeitler, C Lloyd Cushenberry III, OL Blake Hance, DT Jeffery Simmons, NT T’Vondre Sweat, DE Sebastian Joseph-Day, OLB Dre’Mont Jones, OLB Arden Key, OLB Oluwafemi Oladejo, ILB Cody Barton, ILB James Williams, ILB Cedric Gray, CB L’Jarius Sneed, CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr., CB Roger McCreary, S Amani Hooker, S Xavier Woods, S Kevin Winston Jr., P Johnny Hekker, LS Morgan Cox
Not much to say about these guys. Speaking broadly, this is the group of players in or competing for starting jobs. It’s hard to envision a world where any of these players don’t make the team, barring a trade or unforeseen injury.
Looking good (8 players)
Players: RB Kalel Mullings, WR Van Jefferson, OL Jackson Slater, OL Corey Levin, DL Keondre Coburn, DL James Lynch, OLB Lorenzo Carter, K Joey Slye
All of them feel pretty safe. It’s a stretch to call them locks, though. Some seem to have slight edges in position battles loaded with competitors who could overtake them. Some have an experience advantage over younger players who can surprise. Some are draft picks likely to get their chance.
And then there’s Slye, who almost certainly will be the Titans’ kicker for the season, but you can never count out the possibility of a weird kicker battle coming out of nowhere.
They’ve gotta earn it (16 players)
Players: QB Brandon Allen, RB Julius Chestnut, WR Bryce Oliver, WR Xavier Restrepo, TE Josh Whyle, OT John Ojukwu, OL Sam Mustipher, DL Carlos Watkins, OLB Ali Gaye, OLB Jaylen Harrell, CB Darrell Baker Jr., CB Marcus Harris, CB Jermari Harris, CB Gabe Jeudy-Lally, CB Amani Oruwariye, S Julius Wood
If there are 40 guys above this line and 35 below it, this is the middle group that theoretically is in the strongest position to earn the bottom-of-the-roster jobs. It’s competitions galore, filled with younger or more inexperienced players as well as recent waiver claims. Some from this group get beat out, but most should find their way to safety.
Old regime holdovers (9 players)
Players: QB Will Levis, WR Treylon Burks, WR Colton Dowell, WR Mason Kinsey, TE Thomas Odukoya, OT Jaelyn Duncan, OL Andrew Rupcich, LB Otis Reese IV, S Mike Brown
Are they cut candidates? Practice-squad stashes? Trade pieces? This is an interesting group because none was acquired by this coaching staff but all have survived a year of the Callahan era nonetheless. If the roster leans new blood, it’s a tough situation for these players. If institutional experience matters, they have an edge.
There’s a path . . . (11 players)
Players: RB Ty Davis-Price, WR James Proche II, TE David Martin-Robinson, OT Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson, OL Oli Udoh, OL Brenden Jaimes, NT Isaiah Raikes, LB Anfernee Orji, LB Curtis Jacobs, LB Amani Burney, LB David Gbenda
Maybe not the favorites to land jobs, but these are players competing in unsettled positions, youngsters who’ve stood out in the early days of the offseason, and late-offseason adds who can improve their standing with more time in the system.
It’ll be an uphill climb (15 players)
Players: QB Tim Boyle, WR Jha’Quan Jackson, WR T.J. Sheffield, TE Drake Dabney, OL Chandler Brewer, DT Cam Horsley, DT Devonte O’Malley, DT Philip Blidi, OLB Titus Leo, OLB Desmond Evans, CB Clarence Lewis, CB Jalen Kimber, CB Davion Ross, S Kendell Brooks, S Mark Perry
Never say never. Big training camps can make a huge difference, especially for the 10 undrafted rookies here. The practice squad could also call these players home. But these are the Cinderella stories as of now.
