The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday begin a scheduled two-day mandatory minicamp. It’s the first non-voluntary portion of the offseason program.

After the two mandatory sessions, most players will depart the team facility until training camp begins sometime in late July.

While minicamp won’t tell as much of a story as training camp, there are still a bunch of things we’re watching for at San Francisco’s first mandatory practices of 2025:

Is anyone mad?

The previous couple of seasons have had some drama with mandatory minicamp and whether players negotiating contract extensions would participate. San Francisco got their big-money extensions done early this offseason, removing a lot of the drama of the shift from voluntary to mandatory practices. Still, it would be newsworthy if someone doesn’t show up.

Can the 49ers stay healthy?

Keeping players upright and ready to participate in training camp is the No. 1 goal of mandatory minicamp for San Francisco. The less news there is out of minicamp, the better.

What’s Ricky Pearsall doing?

Speaking of injuries, Pearsall isn’t on track to participate as he works through a hamstring issue. It is worth keeping an eye out for whether he’s running sprints or anything on a side field. The club is holding him out to ensure he’s ready for training camp. If he’s working out without participating it’s a good sign for him moving forward.

How’s Bryce Huff acclimating?

We won’t be able to really gauge how Huff is fitting with the 49ers until pads come on and offensive linemen can actually get hands on defensive linemen. Which groups he’s lining up with and how well he’s handling practices with his new club will give us some good insight into how quickly he can hit the ground running in camp.

Is there anything odd with the RB rotation?

We can’t take too much away from how the RBs are rotating. It’s unlikely Christian McCaffrey takes every single first-team rep, so if he comes out for someone else at some point we shouldn’t look into it. On the other hand, it would be noteworthy if undrafted rookie Corey Kiner is the first RB up behind McCaffrey or something.

Are there any rookies making noise?

First-year players won’t make or break themselves in mandatory minicamp, but they can set themselves up for a big training camp if they have a good minicamp. Take any big plays with a grain of salt, even if they’re worth noting as a possible hint at where they’ll be when the reps are live in camp.

Who’s starting at left guard?

This is pretty straightforward. The starting spot at LG for mandatory minicamp should give us a little insight into how the club envisions that position battle shaking out in camp.

Who’s starting at Will linebacker?

This is also straightforward, but with the WLB instead of LG.

Who’s shining in the receiving corps?

The 49ers have some big-time questions at wide receiver. Jauan Jennings is coming off an excellent 2024 campaign. Outside of that there’s no real certainty with anyone on the roster. Pearsall is already dealing with an injury, which opens the door for another WR to push their way up the depth chart. No jobs will be finalized in minicamp, but jockeying for roster spots will certainly begin.
