Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald hosted his final practice of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. The defense has been a consistent strength throughout first voluntary OTAs, and now, must-attend minicamp sessions. It was the strength of the 2024 defense, and appears to be trending that way again in 2025.

Cornerbacks Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon have been constant standouts. According to The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar, both nearly ended minicamp on a high note. Witherspoon and Woolen had would-be interceptions hit them in the hands. Both passes were delivered by starting quarterback Sam Darnold.

Woolen jumped an in-breaking route. Witherspoon telegraphed a slant. It speaks volumes of their route recognition and how comfortable they are in Macdonald’s aggressive defensive system. It’s good to hear Darnold recovered from those ill-advised throws to hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a touchdown. Darnold made Witherspoon pay for dropping a potential interception.

The Seahawks are now done with mandatory minicamp practices. Coach Macdonald is confident in his unit, and the back-and-forth between offense and defense at Wednesday’s session reinforced his confidence. The Seahawks will now break for a lengthy summer break. Training camp will begin on July 23rd, the team recently announced.
