The Cincinnati Bengals already revealed that they won’t be doing joint practices with another NFL team this summer during training camp and the preseason.

Now we know a little bit more as to the why behind the decision.

Speaking with Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor revealed that much of it came down to the preseason schedule itself: “This was a year we decided we were just going to focus on ourselves. A little of it took shape the way our preseason schedule is going to fall. We play Philly pretty quick (Aug. 7) and then we’ve got a long break before playing Washington (Aug. 18).”

Taylor continued:

“We’re going to get six great full padded practices between the Philly game and the Washington game with no distractions, just us going against each other making sure we’re improving on the things we need to improve on. We didn’t even do the (practices) for the tail end of that week, so that we can make those decisions when we get into camp on what we’re going to do and what we’re going to emphasize.”

The Bengals notably swapped out a few coaches this year too, highlighted by new defensive coordinator Al Golden.

It seems likely those Bengals want to focus on themselves and the new things being implemented. It probably doesn’t hurt to avoid showing too much to another franchise in the process, no matter how vanilla they keep things. Bonus points for avoiding injuries, perhaps.

That’s a little more interesting than simple logistics, at least.
