While the official NFL schedule won’t be released until May 14, the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will most likely play in the first game of the regular season. And since the Los Angeles Rams will face the Eagles at some point in 2025, there is also a chance they will play in the season-opening game.
That’s exactly what NFL.com analyst and ex-players David Carr and Maurice Jones-Drew happen. The two former players want to see a rematch of the 2024 Division Round where the Rams took the Eagles to brink before losing by six in a snow-covered game.
“The Los Angeles Rams were close to ousting the Eagles in last year’s Divisional Round but ultimately fell short,” Carr wrote. “The Rams are running it back with Matthew Stafford and replaced Cooper Kupp with Davante Adams. Sean McVay’s offense still has the playmakers to make one more push before the veteran QB calls it career, and Chris Shula’s defense feels like it is about to hit its stride behind a youth-led front. And we know the Eagles aren’t going anywhere. This playoff rematch would kick the season off with a bang.”
Jones-Drew concurred with similar reasons as Carr.
“The squad that was closest to beating the Eagles in their run to the Lombardi Trophy was the Rams, who had the eventual Super Bowl champions on the ropes late in the Divisional Round,” Jones-Drew wrote. “The Rams are a contender once again with Matthew Stafford back under center, and Sean McVay and Co. would love nothing more than to prove that right out of the gate.”
This game would open the year with quick the start and set both Super Bowl contenders on different paths in 2025. A win sets both teams up nicely for the rest of the year, while a lose could make either side look inward to fix issues they assumed would have been corrected during the summer.
Sadly, it would also be the road for L.A.
The Rams will have a tough schedule regardless after finishing with first in the NFC West. In addition to the Eagles, the Rams will face the Detroit Lions, the Baltimore Ravens, the NFC South and the AFC South.
