Broncos Wire‘s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at 11th-year fullback Michael Burton, No. 20.
Before the Broncos: Burton (6-0, 247 pounds) is a big-bodied protector in the backfield, who bounced around the league for the first 10 years of his career. Burton began his career when he was selected in the fifth round (168th overall) in the 2015 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions, where he spent the first two years of his career. Burton then moved south, staying in the NFC North, with the Chicago Bears from 2017-18. In 2019, Burton spent a season in Washington, D.C., before going to the New Orleans Saints in 2021.
Burton finally reached the pinnacle of the NFL, spending two seasons in Kansas City, where he won a Super Bowl in 2022. Burton then came to the Broncos in 2023. Prior to his time in Denver, Burton rushed 28 times for 62 yards and a touchdown and caught 18 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Broncos tenure: Burton signed a one-year deal in 2023, and he returned on another one-year deal in 2024. Used primarily as a blocker on offense, Burton is an unsung hero as a lead blocker and pass protector. He is also a key player in the kicking game, playing 294 snaps on special teams last fall. And while it’s not common, Burton does get touches on offense as well. He picked up six first downs last season, rushing seven times for eight yards and a touchdown while adding 10 receptions for 65 yards and a score. Burton re-signed with the Broncos in March on another one-year deal worth.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. As the Broncos’ only true fullback, Burton provides pass-blocking security and an outlet for quarterback Bo Nix from the backfield, and he’s a key player on special teams. Unless the team plans to convert tight end Nate Adkins to a full-time fullback role, Burton’s roster spot should be safe.
