The New York Giants spent the offseason making a handful of additions to the offensive side of the ball, but one position remains largely unchanged.

Though general manager Joe Schoen did use a seventh-round pick on Thomas Fidone II out of Nebraska, the tight end room for the Giants looks just about the same as it did last year.

Second-year tight end Theo Johnson is expected to lead a depth chart that also includes Daniel Bellinger and Chris Manhertz from last season.

With Russell Wilson expected to begin the season as the starting quarterback, the Giants were named a potential landing spot in a trade for Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, per Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports.

No matter if it’s Wilson or eventually Dart under center, it’d behoove the Giants to give either quarterback a capable tight end as the security blanket. Currently, 2024 fourth-round pick Theo Johnson is atop the depth chart, and while he had his moments during his rookie season, he’s hardly a guarantee to anchor the position group. If he is able to keep up his production from last season, it wouldn’t be that shocking to see Smith come in and compete for the second-most targets on the team behind ascending star receiver Malik Nabers.

Finding more weapons to work with in the passing game would help the Giants’ chances of rebounding from a 3-14 season, the first time ever in franchise history New York finished with 14 losses in a campaign.

The issue with acquiring Smith is that the Giants would likely have to give up future draft capital and then pay the 29-year-old tight end a new contract. That’s the whole reason he’s available on the market in the first place. Smith wants a new deal coming off a career season.

Smith posted 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns with Miami in 2024, and he especially thrived over the second half of the season, with a 17-game pace of 104 receptions for 1,054 yards and 11 touchdowns over his final 12 games.

A deal for Smith seems unlikely, but the Giants could use another weapon in the passing game, so if the price to acquire him isn’t outlandish, it may be something they should consider.
