The Washington Commanders made their selections in the NFL draft, but they could still be in the market for adding more pieces to the roster before training camp starts in the summer. Commanders assistant general manager Lance Newmark said in his post-draft press conference that they are still open to signing available free agents, including Kicker Matt Gay, who just signed with Washington, and that they’ve been in contact with some of them. Here’s a look at five players Washington could still add to make an impact on the team.
Von Miller, EDGE
Washington should still be in the market for a pass rusher after passing up on one in the draft, and even undrafted free agents, and Von Miller could be a tremendous addition. Miller might be 36 years old, but don’t let age fool you into what he’s still capable of. Last season, Miller finished with the 11th-best pass rushing grade on PFF with an 83 grade in his rotational role with the Buffalo Bills. He got to the quarterback for a sack six times last year on only 209 pass rushing snaps, and added 32 pressures and 23 QB hits. Miller serves as a mentor in the offseason, hosting his Pass Rush Summit to train with other pass rushers in the league. He could also be a leader on the defensive line, producing on the field as well.
Za’Darius Smith, EDGE
Za’Darius Smith is another veteran pass rusher who had a very productive season last year and could help Washington get to the quarterback next season. Smith joined the Lions on a one-year deal last season and made the most of his opportunity. He hit double sacks again with 10 on the season, and finished 10th in the NFL with 63 pressures, and sixth in the league with 46 hurries. Smith played a lot more snaps than Von Miller did, with 615 total snaps (421 pass rush, and 178 run defense), compared to Miller’s 279 snaps, primarily as a situational rusher. At 32 years old, Smith could be a player who joins Washington to make a major impact, and re-joins the team a year later.
Justin Simmons, Safety
Justin Simmons didn’t have the flashiest season in his lone season with the Falcons last year, but he still made plays in the secondary with two interceptions and four pass breakups. Simmons is a four-time All-Pro safety who can help add veteran leadership to the safety room, which is young and lacks depth. Quan Martin and Will Harris are projected to be the starting safeties, but Washington needs a third safety for three-safety sets and to rotate bodies in the secondary. They’ve addressed depth at many positions this offseason, but the safety room still lacks it. Simmons would be a great fit for Washington, both in terms of his ability to fit into Coach Joe Whitt’s scheme and as an energy and tone-setter. Simmons is also a Virginia native and has expressed his desire to join Washington.
Julian Blackmon, Safety
Blackmon is one of the younger free agents out there who can make an impact on the next team he joins at only 26 years old. Washington needs more of a safety presence as I mentioned before, and Blackmon offers you the ability to play him at many spots in the secondary, but excels as a single-high safety. Blackmon had his highest coverage and overall grades on PFF last season, and is one of the most sought out free agents after the draft. He finished the 2024 season with 3threeinterceptions and 70 tackles, and played the 6th most snaps in the NFL at 1,084 snaps. Julian Blackmon could improve his tackling, but he would be a great addition to Washington’s defense alongside Martin and Harris in the rotation.
Future #panther ?
Check out Julian Blackmon, Colts FS #32… In 2024, he averaged 36.6 snaps a game, 5.4 tackles, and had 3 picks. The 6’1″, 204-lb 26-year-old S from Utah was Indy’s 3rd-round pick (85th overall) in 2020. pic.twitter.com/XUtosLgc9Q
— Two Shows One Host (@2shows1host) March 24, 2025J.K Dobbins, Running Back
I know this is a hot take to mention him, but how is J.K. Dobbins still a free agent at 26 years old?? If Washington really wanted to revamp the running back room, they would sign J.K Dobbins to compete at camp, and he would easily be one of the top three running backs in the room. Washington did bring back Chris Rodriguez and Jeremy McNichols this offseason, as well as drafting Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round. However, Washington could still make improvements in the running back committee as a whole.
The Commanders’ run game was non-existent for a majority of the season last year, and the futures of Brian Robinson Jr and Austin Ekeler could be up in the air with health concerns. Dobbins is still young and had 195 carries for 905 yards and added nine touchdowns on the ground last season. He was 11th in the NFL in explosive runs (carries of 10+ yards) with 27 last year, while protecting the ball with zero fumbles. This isn’t about names or who has been here the longest; it’s about Washington putting forward the best three running backs on Sunday. It’s really hard to argue that Dobbins wouldn’t be a top-three player in the room.
