Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith had his share of flaws, but he definitely knew what he was doing when it came to the ground game. Under Smith, the team went from a pass-happy offense with no semblance of a running attack to a run-first offense with poor quarterback play.

Now that the Falcons have their quarterback of the future in Michael Penix Jr., the offense is ready to fully take off this season. Make no mistake, though, Atlanta’s rushing attack is still the foundation of this offensive unit.

The team boasts one of the best offensive lines in football and a two-headed monster at running back that stacks up against any duo in the NFL. Bijan Robinson finished third in rushing yards (1,456) last season, while Tyler Allgeier is a former 1,000-yard rusher and one of the league’s most physically dominant backs.

Pro Football Focus released its 2025 running back unit rankings and the Falcons landed at No. 3.

“Atlanta boasts one of the league’s elite running back duos with Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. Robinson was the league’s second-highest-graded running back last season (92.8 PFF rushing grade),” wrote PFF’s Dalton Wasserman. “His receiving ability also sets him apart, as his 82.2 PFF receiving grade ranked fourth among qualified backs. Allgeier posted an outstanding 85.7 PFF rushing grade, though that was earned across just 137 carries.”

Beyond Robinson and Allgeier, the Falcons have some question marks. The team released 2024 sixth-round pick Jase McClellan last week and signed Jashaun Corbin. PFF wasn’t impressed with the team’s depth behind Robinson and Allgeier, but called the duo elite.

“There isn’t much to speak of beyond those two,” added Wasserman. “Third-stringer Jase McClellan garnered only 13 carries last season and was just waived so the team could make room for UFL star Jashaun Corbin, but the pairing of Robinson and Allgeier is elite.”

The Falcons’ running back room is without a doubt the team’s strongest position group, but this may be the final season that we see the “elite’ duo together in Atlanta. Allgeier will be a free agent when the 2025 season ends. Check out the team’s full list of unrestricted free agents in 2026.
