Before OTAs begin, let’s preview the Indianapolis Colts roster on the offensive side of the football.

The Indianapolis Colts will begin Phase III of the offseason programs on May 28th, which means the start of voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

During this portion of the offseason, the team is permitted to do 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills on the practice field rather than only individual drills, which has been the case the last few weeks. However, contact is still not allowed.

So, with offseason programs ramping and concluding in a few weeks with mandatory minicamp, let’s take a position-by-position look at the Colts’ current roster on the offensive side of the football.

Anthony RichardsonDaniel JonesRiley LeonardJason Bean

There may be two separate quarterback competitions taking place on the Colts’ roster this summer. While all eyes will be on Richardson and Jones for the starting spot, in Shane Steichen’s first two seasons, we’ve seen him roster three quarterbacks, which means Bean and Leonard could also be battling it out for that final spot on the 53-man roster. If so, while we have to see how things unfold, Leonard is likely the early favorite.

GM Chris Ballard said at the NFL combine that more production was needed this season behind Taylor. So does someone single-handedly take control of that backup role, or do we see more of a by-committee approach when Taylor isn’t on the field? Also, can one of Herbert, Giddens, or Goodson emerge as a pass-catching presence out of the backfield? This was an element that the Colts were missing last season, but it would add another dimension to the offense.

As far as what to watch for at this position group, if we assume the Colts are going to roster four tight ends, I do think that fourth spot, behind Warren, Alie-Cox, and Ogletree, may be up for grabs. On my recent roster prediction, I had Mallory in that role, but he’s not a roster lock by any means. McKeon and Okwuegbunam are both intriguing players who spent time on the practice squad last season.

The only competition here may be for the two or three spots that are available on the practice squad. Wide receiver was the one position group all offseason where there wasn’t much speculation to be had, whether that be about making an addition or who is going to be on the final roster. The first six receivers listed above are probably what the 53-man roster at this position looks like.

As offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. said, there will be competition for the starting center and guard roles, but I’m sure most expect Bortolini and Goncalves to win those jobs. So my big question at this position is do the Colts go heavy this season and roster 10 offensive linemen? Given the relative lack of experience, potentially starting along the interior, rostering Sills or French as the 10th linemen to bolster the depth could be valuable. That, of course, is contingent on one of them emerging this summer.
