The Houston Texans overhauled their roster following a loss in Kansas City during the divisional round, but that doesn’t mean they become winners. Most analysts are still pondering what went wrong with Laremy Tunsil that eventually led to the trade that shocked the offseason.

On paper, the Texans remain one of the better AFC rosters. The Chiefs, Bills and Ravens are certainly the front-runners, but consider Houston in the same range as Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Denver and Los Angeles for postseason-bound franchises.

But even with the return of All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., plus the departure of former first-round dud Kenyon Green for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, it wasn’t enough to fix the issues that befell the back-to-back AFC South champions in 2024. Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab wasn’t kind to the Texans, giving them a C- for the team’s moves through this point in the NFL calendar.

“This ranking reflects skepticism that the Texans’ offensive line will be good enough to protect C.J. Stroud. If it’s not, the Texans ruining Stroud will become a narrative this season,” Schwab wrote. “The Texans need rookie receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel to pay off.

Schwab’s points are sound: The Texans made moves to solve some of their issues, but not all. Even the movies made weren’t promising. Letting go of Tunsil for four draft picks was wise, but adding a left tackle who allowed the most pressures over the final two months as his replacement likely wasn’t.

The draft class has potential, but it’s not exemplary. Higgins and Noel should be contributors on offense as new weapons in the passing game. Maybe running back Woody Marks adds value in the passing attack on third as a secondary option behind Pro Bowler Joe Mixon.

Jaylin Smith and Jalyen Reed are exciting, but they’re blocked from seeing starting reps with Jalen Pitre and Gardner-Johnson. Second-round pick Aireontae Ersery is expected to serve as the new left tackle for Houston long-term, but he probably won’t start until at least midseason.

There could be more moves left to be made, though, with the season still a few months away. For now, Houston still remains the favorite in the AFC South, but also a step behind the top contenders in the AFC. This offseason changed little.
