The Chargers are less than a month away from the start of training camp, when position battles and players fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster will begin.

We have a good idea of the players who are locks to make it on the squad, and there will always be underdogs who make some noise and find themselves on the team.

With that being said, let’s take a crack at predicting what the roster could look like.

Quarterback (3)

Justin Herbert, Taylor Heinicke, Trey Lance

The Chargers carried three quarterbacks last season, designating the third QB as the emergency backup on game days. They re-signed Heinicke and signed Lance after Easton Stick’s departure.

Running back (4)

Najee Harris, Omarion Hampton, Kimani Vidal, Raheim Sanders

Harris and Hampton are locks to make the roster. Vidal, who was selected in last year’s draft, showed flashes in his rookie season. The real battle will be between Sanders, Hassan Haskins, and Jaret Patterson for the final running back spot. Haskins was a core special-teams player last year, but Sanders brings a complete skill set out of the backfield, making it difficult to keep him off.

Wide receiver (6)

Ladd McConkey, Mike Williams, Tre Harris, Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis, KeAndre Lambert-Smith

The Chargers rostered seven wide receivers last season, but I am going to assume that they roll with six this time around. Brenden Rice and Jalen Reagor will also be battling for a spot on the back end of the depth chart.

Tight end (4)

Will Dissly, Tyler Conklin, Oronde Gadsden II, Stevo Klotz

I have another undrafted rookie making the roster. While Klotz is listed as a tight end in this projection, he will serve as the primary fullback, beating out Scott Matlock for the job. The former Iowa State product has been praised for his versatility and special-teams upside.

Offensive line (9)

Rashawn Slater, Bradley Bozeman, Zion Johnson, Mekhi Becton, Joe Alt, Trey Pipkins, Jamaree Salyer, Andre James, Branson Taylor

No surprises here. I believe Johnson will be the starting center, while Bozeman will start at left guard.

Edge rusher (4)

Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, Bud Dupree, Kyle Kennard

Mack and Tuipulotu are the starters. Dupree and Kennard will be situational/third-down rushers.

Defensive tackle (5)

Teair Tart, Da’Shawn Hand, Naquan Jones, Jamaree Caldwell, Otito Ogbonnia, Justin Eboigbe

Tart returns to a room that has three new additions. Eboigbe is looking to make strides after not being much of a factor in his rookie campaign.

Linebacker (5)

Daiyan Henley, Junior Colson, Denzel Perryman, Troy Dye, Del’Shawn Phillips

The Chargers are hoping to get more out of Colson, their third-round pick from last season. If he struggles to stay healthy, they can lean on Perryman, whom the team re-signed. Dye and Phillips will be key special-teams players.

Cornerback (5)

Cam Hart, Tarheeb Still, Donte Jackson, Benjamin St-Juste, Deane Leonard

Hart, Still and Jackson will be the starters, while St-Juste and Leonard will serve as depth. Ja’Sir Taylor doesn’t make the cut.

Safety (5)

Derwin James, Alohi Gilman, Elijah Molden, R.J. Mickens, Tony Jefferson

With Derwin James primarily playing the Nickel role, it essentially opens up a safety spot. Gilman and Molden will start. Mickens and Jefferson are great depth pieces.

Specialist (3)

Cameron Dicker (K), J.K. Scott (P), Josh Harris (LS)

No changes from last season.
