For many years, the OHSAA divisional breakdowns shook up the area’s football landscape one way or another.
The 2025 division breakdown announced by the OHSAA on May 1 is the exception, as no teams were affected and will compete in the same regions of their respective divisions.
Last year showcased an unprecedented 11 area teams hosting home playoff games. Lorain, Avon, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville, Olmsted Falls, Rocky River, Clearview, Bay, Vermilion, Keystone and Columbia held home playoff games. The Eagles, Rangers, Bulldogs, Rockets, Pirates, Wildcats and Raiders advanced to the next round.
The city of Lorain made history in the first round, as the Titans and Clippers marked the first night two Lorain teams simultaneously hosted playoff games.
The Titans lost to Berea-Midpark, 30-6, and Clearview lost to Napoleon, 49-0.
Vermilion’s 37-21 win against River Valley in a Division IV, Region 14 first-round game was the first playoff win in school history.
Columbia (Division VI Region 21) and Avon (Division II, Region 6) represented the area in the regional semifinalis.
The Raiders lost to eventual Division IV state runner-up, Kirtland, 41-7, in Michael Rice’s first season as coach.
Avon went on to defeat Wadsworth (regional semifinal), Medina Highland (regional final), Akron Hoban (Division II state semifinal) and Cincinnati Princeton (Division II State final) to win its first state championship.
According to the OHSAA, 12 schools were bumped to a higher division because of competitive balance.
Teams will be in summer period until July 31st. They are permitted 13 practices with five acclimation days. One hundred and six teams will compete in Divisions VII, VI and V, there will be 105 in Division IV, 107 in Division III, 104 in Division II and 72 in Division I.

Division IV, Region 14: Firelands (4-6), Brookside (3-7), Clearview (8-3), Bay (7-5, regional quarterfinalist), Vermilion (9-3)
Division V, Region 18: Fairview (7-4), Keystone (10-2, regional quarterfinalist), Wellington (3-7)
Division VI, Region 21: Columbia (10-3, regional semifinalist)
Division VII, Region 25: Oberlin (0-10)
