The Pittsburgh Steelers had a questionable draft at best, and they’re continuing to prep for the 2025 season with no starting quarterback in place.

Although they had opportunities – several opportunities – they chose to wait until the sixth round to find a quarterback in Ohio State’s Will Howard.

But that might not be the most questionable part of their draft.

CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards considers their seventh-round pick, Central Michigan corner Donte Kent, as the most questionable.

Steelers: CB Donte Kent, Central Michigan (Round 7, pick 229)

“There was not much room to poke holes in Pittsburgh’s draft class. Kent just happens to be the one I know least about. Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon felt like a Steelers pick and there was an intentionality to bring more physicality to the roster with this seven-player draft class.”

It’s not surprising that Edwards didn’t know a lot about Kent. His NFL projection pre-draft was to be taken in the seventh round, or even to fall to a PFA (preferred free agent).

Lance Zierlein’s pre-draft analysis of Kent calls to his experience and captaincy with the team, but that’s about it.

“Speedy four-year starter and team captain with the athletic ability to garner Day 3 interest in the draft,” Zierlein wrote. “Kent’s measurables are better suited for the slot, but he can play outside if needed. His speed and burst lead to pass breakups, but he lacks the route anticipation and instincts to turn more of those into interceptions.

“He’s not scheme-dependent but is better in man coverage than he is in zone. He’s tough enough in run support and has potential as a gunner or punt returner, which should increase his draft value.”
