NBA free agency officially kicked off on Monday evening as the negotiating window opened for eligible players and all teams across the league at 6 p.m. ET. The biggest names in the free agent pool, however, already agreed to deals as LeBron James, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Julius Randle and Fred VanVleet all decided to stay put for now. Myles Turner and Jonathan Kuminga were at the top of our list of the best free agents on the market entering Monday evening, and have yet to make their decisions.
While the 2025 free agent market is light on star power, we still saw some significant moves as the negotiating period opened around the league. The biggest of them all came by way of a trade, as the Nuggets sent Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first round pick to the Nets for Cam Johnson. Denver got a player who is a strong fit and serious cap relief, while the Nets took the long view of acquiring a future draft asset that could be incredibly valuable.

On the free agent market, the Hawks, Rockets and Magic continued their busy offseasons with more additions as they try to leap into the title-contender tier. Atlanta added Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard, Houston brought in Dorian Finney-Smith and Clint Capela and Orlando agreed to a deal with Tyus Jones. The Grizzlies and Bucks, meanwhile, moved to bring their own back, with Memphis working out a max extension with Jaren Jackson Jr. and a new deal with Santi Aldama, while the Bucks retained three players from last year’s team in the latest indication that Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t going anywhere.Â
As we turn the calendar to July and the second day of free agency, there are still plenty of teams, including a number of marquee franchises, who need to make some moves. The Celtics, Lakers, Warriors, Knicks and more still have big roster questions that will be answered in the coming days. Adding to the stress in L.A. is LeBron James’ situation, as the legend could still very well be on the move despite opting into a $52.6 million deal with the Lakers for the 2025-26 season.Â
We’ll continue monitoring all that, the signings still left to be made and any more surprising trades that could shift the balance of power in the NBA next season.Â
