Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt continues to hold out on his team while waiting for a contract extension. While both sides want to see a deal done, they haven’t yet found the magic number or structure, which means anything can still happen. And when there are options on the table, the media enjoys toying with ideas of where players could land. It’s not the first time this has been mentioned, but CBS Sports believes the Washington Commanders remain a top landing spot for Watt if he does not reach an agreement with the Steelers.

The Commanders primarily utilize a 4-3 defensive alignment, but Watt has put his hand in the dirt before; you can bet coach Dan Quinn would find a way to unleash Watt just as he did Micah Parsons with the Dallas Cowboys. This is a franchise focused on winning now, as evidenced by other offseason trades, and why not fork over big bucks to Watt while you have Jayden Daniels on a rookie deal? The pass rushing unit could still use a headliner, and Washington has plenty of cap space to use in 2026-2027.

The only seasons Watt didn’t have double-digit sack numbers were his rookie season and 2022, when he was injured. Other than that, his lowest sack total is 11.5. One of the best edge rushers in today’s game, Watt excels at creating pressure and getting in the face of the quarterback. It’s what makes him such a desirable prospect, and it’s exactly why Pittsburgh doesn’t want to lose him.

The Commanders would absolutely welcome a player like Watt to their squad. He would instantly improve their defense and make them a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Even with the Steelers sending players to Miami for Jalen Ramsey, they have no interest in losing Watt. Both sides genuinely want to come to an agreement, so if Watt goes anywhere else, it will be a surprise.
