As of yesterday, Darren Waller was set to be in Las Vegas in a couple weeks to join his former Raiders teammates in a charity softball game. He was retired from the NFL and had nothing better to do. But yesterday, he found something to do. Or rather, the Giants gave him something to do — they traded him to the Dolphins. And with it, Waller is coming out of retirement.
Upon the consummation of the trade, I contacted the organizers of the Battle 4 Vegas charity softball game to see if he would still be playing on Team Brock Bowers with several current Raiders players. I was told that as of that time, he was still on the roster. And I reported as such.
That status changed soon thereafter.
As it turns out, being back on an NFL roster creates a bit of a conflict for Waller. Probably because he has just a few weeks to get up to speed with his new team as well as get back into football shape.
Waller’s spot on the softball team will be replaced by wide receiver Tre Tucker. The rest of team Bowers will be WR Jack Bech, P AJ Cole, K Daniel Carlson, T Thayer Munford Jr., CB Eric Stokes, QB Aidan O’Connell, DB Jeremy Chinn, and RB Sincere McCormick.
They will face off against Jack Eichel and current Vegas Golden Knights players Reilly Smith and Cole Schwindt and former Vegas Golden Knights players Logan Thompson, Deryk Engelland, Ryan Reaves and James Neal. Athletics alumnus Terrance Long will also play for Team Eichel.
