In Brian Schottenheimer’s first offseason as Dallas Cowboys head coach, one can say with some authority that he has done as well as he could have with the staff he’s assembled and the players selected in the NFL Draft.

With an eye on running the football, Schottenheimer hired Klayton Adams and Conor Riley, both of whom have skins on the wall in developing a good rushing attack.

Defensively, Matt Eberflus comes to The Star as coordinator, along with Aaron Whitecotton as the headlining names to help build a defense that can finally stop the run.

The Cowboys selected Tyler Booker, Donovan Ezeiruaku, and Shavon Revel Jr. in the draft, hoping to be three starters come Week 1. They also took running back Jaydon Blue in the fifth round.

That is a solid offseason’s work before the preseason activities get up and running.

One national site thinks it adds up to Dallas being a top-10 team.

But …

Nope, the changes still hasn’t moved the needle for CBS Sports, who in their latest power rankings, have the Cowboys sitting in 18th.

“Brian Schottenheimer takes over as head coach, and the good news is he will have Dak Prescott back healthy after last year’s injury,” CBS Sports writes. “The Cowboys still have a lot of talent, but Schottenheimer needs to mesh it all together.”

Dallas does have a lot of talent, with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Tyler Smith, Jake Ferguson, Trevon Diggs, Micah Parsons, DaRon Bland, Dante Fowler Jr., Osa Odighizuwa, KaVontae Turpin, and DeMarvion Overshown.

But as CBS points out, Schottenheimer has to bring it all together in his vision and develop a style to win football games.

With a clear emphasis on running the football, the Cowboys’ coaching selections and some draft picks point to that being a strength in 2025.

Of course, we have heard about this all offseason, but the proof will be in how the team looks in Oxnard for training camp and then with real NFL bullets flying.

The jury is still out on what Schottenheimer can do with a Dallas team that was 7-10 last season, and until otherwise stated, in the eyes of many, the Cowboys will be a middle-of-the-pack team.
