Free agency never ends in the NFL. Well, unless you count the period between the end of the Super Bowl and the beginning of the new league year one month later. Players are signed throughout the year. With training camp set to begin in only a few weeks for all 32 NFL teams, several capable veteran free agents remain available.

Of course, when you’re a free agent at this point in the offseason, there are often reasons why. In some cases, it’s injuries, or, in others, it’s age.

Matt Holder of Bleacher Report recently predicted the best landing spots for five of the best remaining defensive free agents. Holder named EDGE Za’Darius Smith as a potential match for the Washington Commanders, along with the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.

The Commanders are striving to take advantage of Jayden Daniels’ rookie contract by adding veterans to push for a Lombardi Trophy. However, Dante Fowler, who led the team in sacks with 10.5 sacks last year, returned to the Dallas Cowboys during free agency. So, the Commanders defense could use a pass-rusher to help replace that production.

We’ve discussed Smith, Von Miller, Jadeveon Clowney, Matthew Judon and all other available pass rushers throughout the offseason. For now, the Commanders seem happy to wait until they see what they have in training camp. As it gets closer to Week 1, we could see Washington make a move. Once veterans remain unsigned this late in the offseason, teams often wait until after Week 1 to sign them because their salary isn’t fully guaranteed for the entire season.

The Commanders allowed Fowler to walk because he was a liability against the run. They wanted to add defensive line help this offseason, with a focus on stopping the run first. Head coach Dan Quinn believes he can find a pass rush, and he’ll count on linebacker Frankie Luvu and second-year defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste to help improve the pass rush.

Don’t be surprised if Washington signs someone. And Smith makes the most sense.
