The Patriots have placed an emphasis on upgrading their offense through the first three rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said Friday night that the Patriots will look to address their defense on Saturday in Rounds 4 through 7.
Patriots provide scouting reports on Day 2 2025 NFL Draft picks
The Patriots selected offensive tackle Will Campbell with the fourth overall pick on Thursday. They added running back TreVeyon Henderson 38th overall, wide receiver Kyle Williams 69th overall and center Jared Wilson 95th overall on Friday with two trades that netted them an additional fifth-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round selection.
Among the top players available on Day 3 include Ohio State edge defender Jack Sawyer, Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals, Florida State defensive tackle Joshuah Farmer, Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo, LSU edge defender Bradyn Swinson, Nebraska defensive tackle Ty Robinson, LSU guard Miles Frazier, Purdue guard Marcus Mbow, Texas tight end Gunnar Helm and Stanford wide receiver Elic Ayomanor.
The Patriots have needs at tight end, guard, defensive end, defensive tackle and cornerback. They also should look to add a quarterback and kicker.
Here are the Patriots’ current picks on Day 3. We’ll track them all here.
Round 4, Pick 106: Cal S Craig Woodson
The Patriots used their top pick on Day 3 of the draft on defense, selecting the 6-0, 200-pound safety out of Cal.
Woodson ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine with a 36-inch vertical leap, 10-feet, 7-inch broad jump, 4.20-second short shuttle and 7.06-second 3-cone drill. He played free safety, in the box at strong safety and in the slot last season for the Golden Bears.
Woodson was a three-year starter at Cal, finishing his college career with five interceptions, 21 pass breakpus, three forced fumbles and nine tackles for loss. He earned an 88.5 PFF grade last season in 788 defensive snaps, allowing 27 catches on 38 targets for 243 yards with one touchdowns allowed and two interceptions.
He’s a slightly older prospect at 24 years old, having spent six seasons at Cal. He missed his 2021 season with a knee injury.
He was flagged for just one coverage penalty over the last three seasons, per The Athletic. He also has experience on special teams.
The Patriots don’t have a major need at safety with Kyle Dugger, Jabrill Peppers, Marcus Epps, Jaylinn Hawkins, Marte Mapu, Dell Pettus, Brenden Schooler and Mark Perry already on the roster. But if the Patriots feel that Woodson can play deep as a free safety, then there’s a role for him on the team. It would be unusual for the Patriots to keep more than six safeties on their 53-man roster this season, so difficult decisions will be coming at the end of the summer.
