The New York Giants will enter the 2025 regular season with Russell Wilson firmly entrenched as their starting quarterback. Jameis Winston will back him up, and Jaxson Dart will ride the pine.

There is no quarterback controversy in East Rutherford despite what some headlines would have fans believe. At least for now.

How Wilson performs and the early portion of the season plays out will ultimately be a determining factor in Dart’s future. If the long-time veteran leads the Giants to success, Dart may not touch the field. But if Wilson and the offense struggle, the clock will tick.

Most projections have Dart taking over the reins sometime in the middle of the season, similar to Eli Manning’s rookie trajectory in 2004.

Jaime Eisner of The Draft Network subscribes to that theory and believes Dart will start five games, beginning in Week 13 against the New England Patriots. He also predicts the rookie will put up modest numbers.

Jaxson Dart will need to wait behind Russell Wilson to start the 2025 season. The major question isn’t if but when Dart gets to take over the reins. When could Dart make his first NFL start? I’m targeting Week 13 against the New England Patriots. I expect Wilson and the Giants to be competitive enough to hold off until late November before making the switch, allowing Dart to play against New England before entering New York’s Week 14 bye.

Based on recent trends in head coach Brian Daboll’s playcalling and current team personnel, we can project the Giants to throw roughly 32.50 times per game after averaging 32.62 passing attempts per game over the last two seasons. Looking at comparable players drafted outside the top 10 picks in the NFL draft, let’s assume a yards-per-attempt average of 6.95, a touchdown percentage of 4.36%, and an interception percentage of 2.45%.

Starting Dart would likely be viewed as preservation mode for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, but if the rookie were to put up those numbers, it would likely keep them their jobs. It would also likely build significant optimism for the future.
