President Donald J. Trump has had his share of NFL opinions dating back to his first term more than eight years ago.

Back in April, the Republican commander-in-chief was asked about the Washington Commanders’ five-year-old name change and whether or not they should revert back to being the “Redskins.”
And while Trump attempted to argue that the previous nickname was “superior” to what Washington’s franchise goes by now, he did acknowledge that the former was “a little different” than other retired team names that have used Native American iconography in the past.
Now though, Trump is taking a stronger stance in favor of the Redskins name, telling reporters on Sunday that he never would have changed it were it up to him.
“You want me to make a controversial statement?” Trump told The Hill. “I would. I wouldn’t have changed the name. It just doesn’t have the same, it doesn’t have the same ring to me.”

“But, you know, winning can make everything sound good,” the president acknowledged. “So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
New Commanders ownership has gone on-record that the Skins won’t be coming back— a stark contrast from the Dan Snyder-led regime that argued that it would “never” change under his watch.

However, this also comes at a time when Washington’s organization could be lobbying the Trump’s administration to build a new stadium in the nation’s capital and it makes you wonder what the former real estate mogul may want in exchange for his blessing.

Could we potentially see a return of the Washington Redskins (a dictionary-defined slur)? Or will Josh Harris and Co. continue building themselves a new future as the Commanders?
