Congratulations are pouring in for Ohio State and Michigan’s football programs on Monday.

The Buckeyes and the Wolverines aren’t scheduled to meet on the gridiron for roughly five months. Michigan is set to host Ohio State in Ann Arbor at the end of November. The Wolverines will be looking to win their fifth straight game in the rivalry.

So, why are congratulations pouring in for Ohio State and Michigan in the middle of July?

Well, the Buckeyes and the Wolverines have received a major honor.

There are a lot of great rivalries in college football – Alabama vs. Auburn, Alabama vs. LSU, Florida vs. Georgia, Notre Dame vs. USC, etc. But according to the New York Times, one stands above the rest.

The Athletic named on Monday the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry as the No. 1 rivalry in the country.

According to the reporter, it was an “easy” choice.

“Arguably, Michigan-Ohio State football is the greatest rivalry in American sports. It unquestionably holds that status in college athletics. Their co-dependence deepens the intensity, both in victory and in defeat. There’s history from the territorial conflict over Toledo in 1835-36 that led to Ohioans referring to Michiganders as “Wolverines.” There’s proximity, prominence, moments, stakes, frequency and longevity. There is nothing like it,” The Athletic wrote.

It added: “No teams have engaged in as many ranked matchups (49), top-10 clashes (26) or top-5 showdowns (13). Michigan owns a 23-22-4 advantage in ranked duels, the teams are tied in top-10 showdowns (12-12-2) and Ohio State has the edge in top-five (7-5-1) matchups. At least one team has been ranked in 79 of 88 games since the AP poll debuted in 1936.”

Congratulations are pouring in for Ohio State and Michigan on Monday, for a much-deserved honor.

There is no better rivalry in college football – and perhaps all of sports.

Ohio State won the national title last season, but because the Buckeyes lost to the Wolverines in the regular season, Michigan has bragging rights. That kind of thing doesn’t happen in other rivalries.
