The Washington Commanders have made a decision on a possible name change following a suggestion by President Donald J. Trump.

President Trump made it clear this week that he wasn’t a fan of the Washington NFL franchise going away from the Redskins. He said that if he was running the team, he wouldn’t have changed the name.
“You want me to make a controversial statement? I would,” Trump said to the reporter outside of Air Force One.
“I wouldn’t have changed the name,” he continued. “It just doesn’t have the same — it doesn’t have the same ring to me.”
President Trump, though, admitted that one thing will make things better – winning.
“But, you know, winning can make everything sound good. So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn’t have changed the name,” the president added.

Washington got rid of its Redskins name in 2020. For two years, the team was known as the Washington Football Team, before making the switch to the Commanders in 2022.

The Commanders, though, have already made a decision on a possible name change. Fans of the team have been calling for the franchise to go back to the Redskins or perhaps a different name.
However, Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris previously announced that a decision had already been made. There would be no name change.
“I think it’s now embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff. So we’re going with that,” he said at a press conference earlier this year.

The Commanders did a lot of winning in 2024, reaching the NFC Championship Game.

If Jayden Daniels and Co. can make an even deeper run in 2025-26, the team will surely start to have a deeper connection with its team name.
