During a recent show, ESPN Radio host and former NFL defensive lineman Chris Canty explained his belief that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs a more productive 2025 season to remain amongst the elite at his position.
“Mahomes is incredibly accomplished and the best player in the sport, bar none. We are one more average season by the numbers from Mahomes, from having a conversation about who the best quarterback in the NFL is, not who has the best resume, but who the best quarterback in the NFL currently is, the last two years.” said Canty, “Patrick Mahomes had 27 touchdown passes, 26 touchdown passes this past season, and less than 4,000 yards passing. I mean, it was an average season by his standards.”
Before his career as a sports radio host, Canty was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2005 NFL draft and played for the New York Giants. As a member of New York’s highly praised defensive line, he helped the team win Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots in 2011.

“People don’t because they’re in the Super Bowl; they’re getting to the championship rounds. People don’t want to talk because they’re going on deep playoff runs,” said Canty, “If the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in a situation where they’re not in the Super Bowl championship games, and Mahomes has less than 30 touchdown passes. He has the kind of turnovers that we saw. We’re talking about him having 15 to 20 turnovers, and then all of a sudden, it’s going to become a question of who the best quarterback in the NFL is. Now listen, for my money, if I’m starting a team, it’s Patrick Mahomes over everybody else because this guy is a proven winner, and to me, at quarterback, that matters more than all of the numbers.”
The two-time league MVP finished 2024 with 3,928 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Last season was his first as a starter without 4,000 passing yards.
