Spring Football Game offers first look at this year’s CMU Team

  • May 3, 2025

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Coming off a breakout season in 2024, we got our first look at what Colorado Mesa Mavericks Football Team will look like this upcoming season.

The Mavericks battled for a Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference Title throughout the season, lead by a stifling defense and opportunistic offense, finishing 7-4 tied for third.

While just an exhibition game, the Mavericks on the field Friday evening played a similar style to last season’s squad.

“Putting guys in different situations being able to understand where they’re at when those situations present themselves next season. So I’m just trying to put them in the most realistic opportunities out there to kind of showcase what they can do,” Colorado Mesa Head Football Coach Miles Kochevar said.

A lot of the young talented players from last season’s team will be returning as well, looking to grow as football players, and get more comfortable executing the Maverick’s playbook.

“We’re not really the baby brigade anymore, so we got guys going into their third year and now we’re going to be off campus. So just that growth and what we’ve been able to do, we have a lot of guys make huge gains, not only in the weight room but with their weight and where they’re at. And so we’re excited to watch that pay off over the summer,” Coach Kochevar said.

CMU also reported their signing class earlier this year, featuring several local signees, you can read more on that here.
