Giants Future Plan With Malik Nabers Takes New Turn With Rival’s Contract originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

New York football teams may not know what they have at the quarterback position, but they do understand how great their wide receivers are.

One of the top ones just got paid. … and it is a notable move as it regards the other one.

Former Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson on Monday received a lucrative four-year extension worth over $130 million with the New York Jets. The annual average of over $32.5 million vaulted Wilson into the top-five of highest-paid players at his position.

Wilson’s numbers have been impressive impressive enough for the Jets in his first three NFL years. While he has gone through seven different quarterbacks and has never missed a game, in his three seasons with the team Wilson has totaled 279 catches for over 3,200 yards, and 14 touchdowns.

He is coming off a 101-catch, 1,104-yard, and seven touchdown season.

Those numbers are that of a Pro Bowl-caliber player.

Luckily for the Giants, they have their own star receiver. The sixth-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Malik Nabers stunned the football world last season with a 109-catch, 1,204-yard season. Like Wilson, Nabers had to deal with multiple quarterbacks in his rookie cmapaign.

That didn’t stop him from putting up some magical performances and some huge receiving numbers.

So what’s next?

Way down the line – after his third season – Nabers will be eligible for his own monster deal. Ja’Marr Chase with the Bengals is now the gold standard at $40 million APY.

How high will that high bar be in a few years? Will Nabers be the guy who re-sets the market at $50 mil APY? More?

In New York, Nabers and Wilson will be tied together moving forward. That is what happens when both players compete in the same stadium, in the same city, for two different teams.

So yes, Wilson’s new contract will be a barometer for Nabers once his contract conversation eventually comes up in a couple of years. But so will Chase’s. The kind of long-term deal received by the Jets star is just one more indicator that the market for a No. 1 receiver is only going up. And up. And up.
