(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Following Kansas City, Mo. Mayor Quinton Lucas’ comments regarding the Kansas City Chiefs leaving St. Joseph for training camp, a sunshine request to Missouri Western State University reveals the length of the new training camp agreement.
According to the new training camp agreement made on June 20, 2025, the Chiefs will hold their next six training camps in St. Joseph, including next week’s camp.Â
KQ2 submitted a sunshine request to MoWest for the new agreement and in the agreement, it reads that the Chiefs will hold 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, and 2030 training camps at MoWest unless earlier terminated.Â
The contract states that there are termination options for both the host (MoWest) and the Club (the Chiefs).
In the contract, MoWest has the option to opt out following the “Evaluation Period” of the 2025 Training Camp and must submit written notice to the Chiefs. The contract states that the “Opt-Out Notice” can only be delivered by MoWest from Nov. 1, 2025 through Nov. 15, 2025. Leading up to the “Opt-Out Notice”, the Chiefs can request any Missouri Western revenue and expenses related to camp.
If MoWest was to opt-out following the 2025 training camp, the Chiefs have within 10 days following the “Opt-Out Period” to tell MoWest if they want to continue the agreement for some or all of the remaining training camps.Â
There will be a “Renegotiation Period” of 45 days that will see the two sides meet, and potentially work out an agreement to continue the deal depending on the terms decided in the “Renegotiation Notice”. The contract states that updated terms could potentially include direct financial assistance from the Chiefs or help from the Chiefs for MoWest to secure additional funding.Â
If a deal can’t be reached, the agreement will end at 12:01 a.m. on the day following the conclusion of the “Renegotiation Period.”
The Chiefs also have the ability to opt-out of the training camp contract, too.Â
Per the contract, no later than Nov. 1 of the same calendar year after any training camp, the Chiefs can, “in its sole discretion (and irrespective of whether it delivers a notice), terminate this agreement for any and no reason by providing written notice to MoWest.”Â
In an example of that situation, the Chiefs could terminate the contract following the 2027 Training Camp by providing written notice on or before Nov. 1, 2026.
The Chiefs can also end the agreement if there is a change in ownership, a change in head coach, or a change in the Chiefs’ stadium location. Another example of this includes the Chiefs ripping up the contract following the conclusion of the 2027 Training Camp by providing written notice on or before March 1, 2027.
The Chiefs will start the 2025 edition of training camp at MoWest on Tuesday, July 22. For a full list of training camp dates, click here.
