The Chargers made a concerted effort to get Justin Herbert and the offense some help in the 2025 NFL draft.

The team selected wide receivers Tre Harris in the second round and Keandre Lambert-Smith in the fifth round. They also added running back Omarian Hampton with the first round selection and tight end Orande Gadsden II in the fifth round. All in all, it was a productive draft for the offense.

After a one-year hiatus, the team also added Mike Williams to the wide receiver room. But do all these moves make a receiver expendable to pick up draft capital? Alex Kay of Bleacher Report believes so, and I am not so sure I follow the logic behind this one.

Kay believes that the unreliability of Quentin Johnston, plus the additions made this offseason, make the 2023 first-round pick expendable in a trade. While the Dallas Cowboys could use the help, and certainly returning to his home state could be appeasing, this feels counterproductive for the Bolts.

That lack of consistency, coupled with L.A. utilizing a second-round pick on receiving prospect Tre Harris and bringing back longtime receiver Mike Williams in free agency, could spell the end of Johnston’s tenure with the organization. – Alex Kay

Yes, the Cowboys could use another weapon to play alongside CeeDee Lamb, but trading him to Dallas due to adding a second-round pick and re-signing a player to a one-year contract doesn’t feel like the beginning of the end. Johnston did show promise in the 2024 regular season finale after hauling in 13 receptions for 186 yards against the Raiders.

Bringing Williams back to help lead this wideout room is a good move if it pans out but there is a reason that the team signed him to a one-year deal. The former Clemson wide receiver was a very productive receiver from 2018 to 2022, but over the last two seasons, he has accumulated 40 receptions for 547 yards and two touchdowns with three different teams. Most of that production came in 2023 with LA.

It would be better to take a wait-and-see approach than trading away a young player on a rookie contract over hope that these three additions to the WR room will pan out.
