NFL pro Quan Martin returned to his hometown of Fort Myers to host a special event for local kids. The Washington Commanders’ defensive back organized the “Tackle the School Year” backpack drive to help children prepare for the upcoming academic year.
In partnership with Walmart, Martin distributed 350 backpacks filled with supplies, including composition notebooks and water bottles, to students ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade. The event took place at the Fort Myers Police Athletic League, where kids had the chance to pick their own backpacks and meet the Commander’s safety.
Martin expressed his motivation for organizing the event, emphasizing the significance of education.
“We had a small window come up and just wanted to include everybody,” said Martin. “Do something for the kids. Do something for the community. It starts in school, man. Education is super important, and it was important for me growing up. So, I just wanted to let them know education is important and is the gateway for a lot of things in life and your career.”
Robert Hendry from Walmart Corporate Affairs and Community Affairs highlighted the diversity of the attendees.
“We have a great range of ages that are here from very young, just entering kindergarten, and on up,” said Hendry. “So we tried to have a good assortment depending on the age.”
The children also enjoyed a pizza lunch and ice cream during the event. Martin, a Lehigh Senior High graduate, is preparing for his third season with the Washington Commanders after helping them reach the NFC Championship game.
