On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers welcomed their rookies to their SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, for the start of their first training camp as pros, with veterans expected to join seven days later.
However, on Friday, the 49ers announced a group of six players who have been placed on the active/PUP list, meaning they won’t be practicing until they’re removed from the list. The group included wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, offensive tackle Andre Dillard, defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos, safety Malik Mustapha, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and linebacker Curtis Robinson.
Aiyuk, 27, is recovering from a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus that he suffered in the team’s Week 7 battle with the Kansas City Chiefs last offseason. He’ll miss the start of camp and could be out to start the 2025 season, but when he returns, he’ll be their top wideout.
Dillard, 29, joined the 49ers this offseason after spending 2024 with the Green Bay Packers. The former first-round pick will likely be the team’s top backup tackle when he’s back to practice.
Gross-Matos, 27, is entering his second season in San Francisco and will have a chance to take on a larger role in 2025, but with new additions Bryce Huff and Mykel Williams expected to be there for training camp, he may be behind in the race.
Mustapha, 23, was the 49ers’ fourth-round pick last year and started 12 games as a rookie before tearing his ACL in the season finale. He’ll likely miss a chunk of the regular season, but when he returns, San Francisco could use him in the back-end of their defense.
Pearsall, 24, was San Francisco’s first-round pick in 2024, and after missing time due to a gunshot wound, he returned to catch 31 passes for 300 yards and three scores. The 49ers could really use the second-year wideout early this season, so hopefully, the stay on the list is short.
Robinson, 27, is entering his fifth season with the 49ers, but he missed most of last season due to a torn ACL that he suffered in practice. He re-signed with San Francisco this offseason, but he’s still recovering.
On top of these five, the 49ers also placed offensive lineman Ben Bartch and safety George Odum on the non-football injury list. They also won’t be able to practice until they return from the list.
Bartch, 26, joined the 49ers in 2023 and has played a depth role throughout his first two seasons with the team. He’s expected to compete for the starting left guard job this year when he returns from NFI.
Odum, 31, signed with San Francisco back in 2022 and has been a backup safety and core special teamer over the last three years. With Mustapha expected to miss the beginning of the season, Odum could play a bigger role this season if he can return to the practice field quickly enough.
