The New England Patriots have a new kicker. With the 182nd overall position in the sixth round, they selected Andres Borregales out of the University of Miami.

Let’s grade the pick.

Instant grade: Patriots draft Andres Borregales 182nd overall

Bernd: The Patriots needed a kicker, and they got one. Borregales was the top-rated player on the board after making 94.7 percent of his field goals — i.e. 18 of 19 — and all 62 of his extra points last season. There might be questions about value, but at this point in the draft the process is essentially about getting a head start before free agency. | Grade: B+

Brian: We don’t love using draft capital at the kicker position, but New England lands who is viewed by many as the top consensus kicker in the draft with pick No. 182. Borregales leaves Miami with a career make rate of 86 percent which includes hitting 75 percent of his kicks over 50 yards. | Grade: C+

Matt: Andres Borregales was a first-team All-ACC kicker for the past two seasons who made 40 of his 45 attempts in that span, including 6 of his 8 from 50-plus. Borregales is an accurate kicker with a decent leg, although he is not projected to be anything special on kickoffs. The Patriots needed a kicker, and he was the top-rated one by most scouts. That said, I don’t love drafting a kicker with the NFL’s track record of drafting compared to signing undrafted players, and the Patriots could always retain the option of signing someone from the UFL instead. | Grade: C+

Pat: The Patriots brought in a ton of kickers in their pre-draft process, so this pick was inevitable. I think Borregales is the best kicker in the draft, and he is known for his smooth execution. His fundamentals and accuracy are both the best in this class. While he doesn’t have the biggest leg, the upside of the accuracy and professionalism is enough to make him a smart pick here. | Grade: B

The Patriots’ next draft pick is set to come at No. 220 in the seventh round. Their biggest remaining needs include off-ball linebacker and developmental tight end.
