Tough Sledding Expected For Jets’ Justin Fields originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The New York Jets with Justin Fields aren’t expected to amount to much in 2025 in Aaron Glenn’s first year as head coach, but that doesn’t mean Fields can’t impress.

Coming to the Big Apple looking to ignite his career, Fields will have a decent supporting cast around him and a scheme that centers around running the football, so it might produce decent results.

But what can we expect from Fields overall?

Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame, in ranking all 32 quarterbacks based on what he thinks they will do this season, Fields comes in at No. 30.

“Fields is starting for his third team in as many years, largely because he fails to create explosive passing plays,” Verderame writes. “With the Jets, Fields has star receiver Garrett Wilson, who recorded 101 catches and 1,104 yards last year, but not much else. New York traded away Davante Adams and is relying on veterans Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds.

“Fields must continue using his legs (he’s rushed for 2,509 yards in his career) while cutting down his fumbles and sacks. Fields has fumbled 44 times, including a league-high 16 in 2022, while being sacked 151 times in 50 games.”

Running will be a big part of Fields’ offensive arsenal under Tanner Engstrand, so too will be the ability to be a consistent passer when the opportunity presents itself.

Having Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds, and Allen Lazard will help, but the run game will be crucial to any success New York has in 2025, and Fields is going to have to be a part of that.

While we think Fields is predicted to be the 30th-ranked quarterback in football come the end of the year is a little low, it might be fair based on the perception of the Jets right now.

But that means for Justin and the Jets, the only way is up in 2025.
